should just be simple. You want a program to do something.. and just that something.. no more no less... but more often than not it comes with more bells, whistles and steaming frilly bits than a gypsy fair on a hot summers day
Plug-ins are like that sometimes... so are some of the Joomla components that are available.. they either do so much yet all I want is a fraction of what's on offer or they are pretty dang close to perfect for my needs... yet somethings still missing.... ahhh life
I've been using Combomax by Phil Taylor to allow article comments on bee.geek for just a little while... it's an ok component but I had to tweak the template to get the look and feel I was after and you had to register at the site to post a comment or I had to allow guest posting which didn't appeal as you suddenly became extremely vulnerable to bots screaming around all over the place deposting spam in every known and unknown corner of the site...
Before purchasing Combomax I toyed around with Akocomment & AkocommentPlus by Walter Cedric, for the life of me I can't remember why I didn't opt for that instead.. I kinda suspect it's because it wouldn't allow guests to insert their own username and as such all guest comments showed as "guest" regardless of who has posted.
Walter is currently running AkoComment 2.2 on his site which allows the guest field to be altered..perfect! .and there is a recent article posting stating that version 2.2.5 will be released soon...perfection plus! and AkoComment offers spam protection (or perhaps a dang good deterrent) by using SecurityImages(it also offers comment tracking which would be pretty handy for some)... I was nearing heaven in a download! but it hasn't been released yet... and then I got all confused as to what was being released soon because it seems that AkoComment is to become com_opencommentwhich intergrates with the yet to be released Joomla 1.1...
I did a little more poking around and eventually stumbled across Akocomment Tweaked which seemed just the solution I was looking for. It offers guest access while still using security images, unregistered users can personalise their post with their own name if desired and for registered users the name field is automatically filled out.. just what I was looking for... a working example below
